Proclamation
Domestic Violence Awareness Month
October 2020
WHEREAS, Domestic violence is a crime that is perpetrated against people of every age, sex, race and income level;
WHEREAS, In Warren County in 2019 A Safe Place provided 217 days of shelter to 12 adult victims and 15 children of domestic violence;
WHEREAS, In the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 2019, 112 people were killed as a direct result of domestic violence;
WHEREAS, Of the 112 victims killed in domestic violence situations in the Commonwealth, 46% were by an intimate partner;
WHEREAS, Domestic violence affects the trust, self-esteem and sense of safety for victims;
WHEREAS, Women, men and children deserve safe, healthy relationships free of physical, emotional, sexual and financial abuse;
WHEREAS, Approximately 26% of children under the age of 18 are exposed to domestic violence in their lifetime;
WHEREAS, in 2020, during this pandemic, more victims of domestic violence and their children are further isolated by their abusers;
WHEREAS, Now more than ever victims of domestic violence need support of their families, friends, neighbors, and most of all…their communities
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, We the Commissioners of Warren County proclaim the month of October, 2020 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and urge all citizens to observe this month by becoming aware of the tragedy of domestic violence, supporting those who are working toward its end, and participating in community efforts.
